Creative Class

At Brookside, we are excited to embrace curiosity and wonder as the focal points of our play-based, Reggio-inspired approach to early learning. By incorporating various provocations and engaging sensory activities, we aim to discover JOY each day while sharing valuable learning experiences with our children! The Brookside staff recognizes that children are capable individuals, friends, communicators, artists, dancers, musicians, storytellers, actors, mathematicians, engineers, and poets, brimming with a sweet desire to savor life's moments! Our goal is to offer every child the chance to develop wisdom and essential skills that will shape them into valuable members of their community!

In addition, all classes, from infant to 4k, feature notably smaller class sizes than most centers. Maintaining these small class sizes fosters a warm environment and enables our teachers to provide your child with the care, support, and attention they need and deserve!

What to expect at Brookside:

IMG_1516.HEIC

An astounding facility!

Our facility is TOP OF THE LINE!  From the furnishings and finishes to every piece of equipment, our facility and supplies reflect the level of care you can expect from our highly qualified and experienced staff!

IMG_1070.HEIC

A Christian environment!

We want every child (and family!) to know that Jesus loves them with a perfect love beyond anything we'll ever understand! Our staff do this through our choice of words, actions, reactions, and teaching times (including praise music, bible story time, and prayer over meals.). Jesus commanded us to "Let the little children come to Me", and we love to see that happen!

An outdoor area your kid will LOVE!

Our playground took a backseat to the rest of the facility remodel, but it is a work in progress!  We're working with consultants and advisors to design an outdoor experience!  You won't see big flashy equipment on this one.  Part of our Reggio inspired approach is creating a natural playground, where kids get to explore and express their creativity!

Shelbie and Matt Manor, Owners/Program Directors
Adalyn and Easton, Staff Development

Shelbie and Matt have 2 kids (Adalyn-5, and Easton-2).  They play a big part in the Brookside story! (See below). Matt owns and runs Son Seekers After School, and Shelbie is in her 9th year of elementary education (and 10th year of assisting with Son Seekers.)  With 26 years of childcare/education experience between them, a very high standard for childcare, and several rounds of getting childcare centers started from the ground up, they are facilitating all the moving parts to ensure Brookside is... Brookside!

With 15 years of experience in the field (seven of which in an administrative position), Mrs. Kayla brings a broad scope of experience to the table! She also holds an Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. Her combination of hands-on experience and leadership skills makes her the perfect person to guide curriculum development.
In this role, Mrs. Kayla collaborates closely with our educational consultant, Terre Harris, to bring fresh, innovative ideas and dynamic learning experiences into our children's daily activities. Her commitment to education, innovation, and FUN ensures that every child receives the highest quality care and instruction, while loving their time at Brookside, making her an invaluable member of our team!

Mrs. Gay Burt, Lead Infant and Toddler Care Teacher

Mrs. Gay brings 34 years of experience to our Brookside family, with most of those years spent working directly with children. At one point accepting an offer to be a center director, she returned 3 years later to her true calling—caring for and nurturing young children.

You’ll often find her spending time with infants, but every child loves when she walks into a room! Her warm, loving presence makes a lasting impact on everyone she meets, and she brings a sense of joy and comfort to our little ones every day.

"It has been my great privilege to help Brookside become a great opportunity for so many young children and families in the Florence community. A great adventure lies ahead for the children who attend Brookside. Let’s go!"

Terre Harris, Consultant

A distinguished leader in early childhood education with over 40 years of hands-on experience, Terre began her career in 1977 as a public school teacher, and has since made quite the impact in early childcare. She currently serves as president of the Jackson Association of Children Under Six. As a consultant, Terre has been an instrumental part in launching and transforming some of Mississippi's most prestigious early childhood centers. Her career highlights include directing a MAIS-accredited preschool from 2002 to 2018, after serving as a classroom teacher and assistant director from 1988 to 2002. Now, in her "retirement," Terre dedicates her time to mentoring the next generation of education leaders. Her deep expertise, extensive network, and unwavering commitment (as well as her vivacious personality!) make her an invaluable asset to Brookside!

The Brookside Story

For four years, we had a center that our kids absolutely loved, and that we loved. It was almost like a hidden gem. We said (and meant) we would drive however far to keep our kids with them until they aged out. We were devastated to learn that the church had voted to end the childcare program, while instantly having a gut feeling that something greater was to come.  At that time, it was a simple phrase from one of the staff, "I just don't feel like God's done with me yet!" that prompted us, and other families, to begin praying for them, "What's next?"

Brookside was born after we had our kids with an amazing team of caregivers from 8 weeks old. When we met them, there was no question in our minds that we wanted our kids with this group. The center was peaceful (a preschool… peaceful!) and the sweet spirits of the staff made us feel instantly at home. One of the staff members welcomed us with a kind, humble smile when we randomly popped in and gladly gave us the initial tour. All the kids looked so happy and comfortable in their environment. The staff exuded experience and love for the kids. We saw the care in action when we met Mrs. Gay, the caregiver who would be with our baby girl in the infant room—loving on the babies just as she always does. Aside from being loved on so well, our children learned so much!

Fast forward four years, and in January, we received notice that the church housing the center had voted to end the childcare program in May. Little did any of us know that God was up to something really amazing! We eventually realized that God had been preparing people and facilities for Brookside for years, with everything falling into place in His timing in a beautiful way, just like He always does. When the discussions became serious, we ALL agreed that "this center" HAD to be AMAZING in every way, or we were out. We had no interest in just making more childcare openings at the status quo. We knew this was going to be something GREAT.

While we are the "least" experienced in early childhood education in the crew, we knew exactly what we wanted and dreamed for in a center for our kids. That became the role we played in shaping Brookside. It has created wonderful conversations and attention to detail to ensure we are literally creating the center that both parents and their kids (as well as the staff making it happen) dream of! Not to mention, our entire opening staff at Brookside has either been with our babies for years or worked with us at Son Seekers, and all have degrees in early childhood education. We literally have an entire staff that we would hand-pick to be with our children!

We were connected with Terre Harris early on, and she has been phenomenal! Using her expertise with the Reggio Emilia learning approach, she has helped us blend a great, established staff with room layouts, furniture, and more that give everything the kids do a purpose. The kids stay engaged, love what they do, how they do it, and who they do it with. We seriously couldn’t be more excited about the center we are creating for our children—and for so many other children to enjoy!

We get asked a lot about where the name "Brookside" came from. We wanted a reminder, for years to come when our kids age out and complacency could set in, of what started all of this. So, we found a way to honor our son, Easton Brooks, by incorporating his name into the center’s name! (And it just felt right!) We get so excited about our own kids going here that sometimes we have to remind ourselves how many other families will be able to feel that same joy!
